BORN TO SOLDIER by Michael Fairley Charles John Fairley was born in 1871 into a family steeped in military tradition so, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the British Army. After a spell with the Royal Engineers in Singapore and Gibraltar he served in the 1899 South African War, fighting the Boers in the Transvaal. Re-enlisting at the beginning of WWI he fought on the Somme and then in Macedonia, with the Serbs in their struggle against the Bulgarians. He even managed to participate in WWII, training Home Guard Units in the defence of Britain.
