A GENIUS FOR WAR
by Carlo D'Este

A study on the life of General George S. Patton - considered by his German opponents the most able of the US Generals of WWII. An extrovert but also an intensely private man, 'Old Blood and Guts' wore two ivory handled pistols at his belt. He is infamous for slapping two hospitalised GIs for 'cowardice', but he motivated his troops and frightened the enemy. Eisenhower relieved him of his military governorship of Bavaria and his command of the US Third Army in October 1945. He died shortly after a road accident in the Rhineland in December, 1945.

EISENHOWER: ALLIED SUPREME COMMANDER
by Carlo D'Este

With full access to his private papers and letters, D'Este traces Eisenhower's meteoric rise to high command and identifies the complex character behind Ike's calm self-assurance. He reveals a man of surprising complexity: A born optimist who always expected to win. Eisenhower was a master manipulator who concealed sharp intelligence. In the hours before D-Day Ike seemed like the loneliest man in the world. As he remarked to Kay Summersby, "It's hard to look a soldier in the eye when you fear you are sending him to his death".
