PROCEEDINGS OF THE GENERAL COURT MARTIAL ON CAPTAIN WATHEN 15TH KINGS HUSSARS

Facsimile of 1834 edition. One of the most celebrated courts martial in the British Army of the 19th Century, that of Captain Augustus Wathen, 15th King's Hussars, was for "conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman" in a matter stemming from the issue of new stable-jackets to the men of his troop. His commanding officer Lord Brudenell, later of the charge of the Light Brigade fame, was removed from the command of his regiment, and Captain Wathen was acquitted of the charges.

He worked for the moral and religious welfare of his troops. His family settled in Ireland early in the sixteenth century, the family estate being Levalley, in Queen's County.
