Alexander was an outstanding Guards officer in WWI. Thereafter he commanded a Brigade of German Balts to assist the liberation of Latvia, led a successful campaign on the North West Frontier in 1935, and in WWII he commanded the Dunkirk perimeter. He conducted the retreat from Burma and became C-in-C Middle East, C-in-C 15th Army Group, and Supreme Allied Commander Mediterranean. Alexander received the German surrender in Italy on 29th April, 1945.

Erich Friedrich Wilhelm Ludendorff was Generalquartiermeister during World War I, victor of Liège, and, with Paul von Hindenburg, one of the victors of the battle of Tannenberg.
