In World War I he was badly wounded at Gallipoli, and later served in France and Mesopotamia. Between the wars he served with Gurkha regiments and taught at Camberley Military College. From the outbreak of the World War II Slim served in the Middle East, commanding the Indian 10th Infantry Division in the Syria-Lebanon campaign. He became a legend in the Burma campaign, initially saving Burma Corp by withdrawing it to India, and later taking over command of XV Corp from the incompetent Irwin. He defeated the Japanese at such legendary battles as Kohima and Impahl, finally taking Rangoon in early 1945.
