When Jessie became pregnant the full force of Scottish middle class prejudices was brought to bear on them. On 17 October, 1914, he enlisted for Lochiel's Camerons and that same day, he married Jessie. He survived Loos and Arras but died from injuries received at Passchendaele in October 1917.
