The years 1914 to 1918 saw Europe engaged in a conflict involving a greater area and a greater number of men than history had ever before recorded. In this book the author, an expert in military history, discusses the military side of the war in the light of its battles, tactics and weapons; its problems of supply and transport; its armies and their commanders. The engagements in the many theaters of war in Europe, Asia and Africa are described in vivid detail, but particular attention is focused on the Western Front.

WITH THE 1/5TH ESSEX IN THE EAST
by Lt.-Col. T. Gibbons D.S.O

Unusually for a British service Battalion, the Fifth battalion of the Essex Regiment spent its entire Great War service in action against the Turks. It had a bloody baptism of fire when it was thrown into the inferno of Gallipoli in 1915, fighting in the trenches near Anzac Cove. The rest of its war was spent in Egypt, guarding the Suez Canal, and then in Gaza and Palestine, where the battalion formed part of Allenby's successful advance to capture Jerusalem and Damascus in 1918. A facsimile reprint of the 1921 original, illustrated by photographs, maps and accompanied by a Roll of Honour, this is a fine history.
