U-552: THE RED DEVIL BOAT by Axel Urbanke and Michael Rey German/English text. New from publisher, unread. U-552 was one of the legendary U-boats of the Second World War. Under its commander Erich Topp, it carried out a total of ten operational patrols, sinking 30 ships and damaging three in a period of 20 months. In the days of the big convoy battles, when the Allies’ detection technology had not yet been perfected and convoys were at best weakly escorted, Topp was among the U-boat arm’s most successful commanders. Within 16 months he was decorated with the Knight’s Cross, the Oak Leaves and the Swords. U-552, it's Red Devil emblem, was probably photographed more than any other U-boat. Includes photos from all of the boat’s patrols, a war cruise chronology with detailed descriptions, together with color graphics and maps.2020, Luftfahrtverlag-Start, Axel Urbanke & Michael Rey, 9783941437340,< N-01>,Large landscape format, 352pp, 318 b/w photos, 24 colour maps & graphics, new in d/w, Eng/Ger.text, Subject...Naval & Maritime: Ships, Submarines & Other Vessels - GeneralWeb No. 38136-01..............................£74.00 |

THE FROGMEN. THE STORY OF THE WARTIME UNDERWATER OPERATORS by T J Waldron and James Gleeson Red Boards. No d/w. Slight fading on spine and front. 1951 reprint. As the war developed all nations used frogmen for a variety of roles including placing limpet mines and the cutting of torpedo and submarine netting. These were among the bravest men of the Second World War. Divers enjoyed the new techniques of aqualungs, and the first were underwater oxygen rebreathers made in 1933 by an Italian company.
