GUNTHER PRIEN AND U-47: THE BULL OF SCAPA FLOW by Dougie Martindale On the night of 13/14 October 1939, the Type VIIB U-boat U-47, on its second War Patrol, penetrated the main Royal Navy base at Scapa Flow and sank the British battleship HMS Royal Oak. This legendary attack is remembered as one of the most audacious raids in the history of submarine warfare. Entering service in December 1938 under the command of Oberleutnant zur See, later Kapitänleutnant Günther Prien, after sinking HMS Royal Oak both Prien and his famous U-boat were known thereafter as ‘The Bull of Scapa Flow’. During a celebration in Berlin to mark the sinking, the crew members of U-47 were received by Adolf Hitler. For his part, Prien received the Knight’s Cross, becoming the first U-boat officer and only the second member of the Kriegsmarine to receive this decoration.2018, Frontline Books, , 9781526737755,< N-01>,450pp, numerous colour & b/w photos & illustrations, new in d/w, , Subject...Naval & Maritime: Ships, Submarines & Other Vessels - GeneralWeb No. 37839-01..............................£25.00 |

ENGLAND & THE SPANISH ARMADA: THE NECESSARY QUARREL by James McDermott The Armada campaign pitted Europe's mightiest military power against Christendom's most powerful navy in a battle for different ideals of civilization. Both protagonists expected the clash to be decisive; neither, as it soon became apparent, knew how to fight a battle whose scale and character were beyond the experience of anyone in the two fleets. What ensued was not the heroic encounter of legend, but an inconclusive affair, redeemed for England by atrocious weather, and poor Spanish understanding of the coastlines of western Scotland and Ireland.2005, Yale University Press, , 030010698X,< N-01>,411pp 16 illustrations, very good in d/w, , Subject...Naval & Maritime: Ships, Submarines & Other Vessels - GeneralWeb No. 23301-01..............................£12.00 |
