'THE GREATEST SQUADRON OF THEM ALL': TWO VOLUME SET by David Ross The Definitive History of 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron, Royal Auxillary Air Force. It was at the height of the Battle of Britain that the Commanding Officer of RAF Hornchurch, Group Captain "Boy" Bouchier described 603 as "perhaps the greatest squadron of them all". Volume One covers the period from their formation as a light bomber unit in October 1925 until the end of 1940. Volume Two details the 603 story through 1941 and on to the squadron's part in the siege of Malta, anti-shipping strikes by its Beaufighters, and operations against V2 launch sites. After the war, 603 Squadron re-equipped with Spitfires and then Vampire jets prior to disbandment in 1957. Re-formed in 1999, the squadron's personnel served in TELIC, the British contribution to Operation Iraqi Freedom, in the Spring of 2003. The set is co-authored by Bruce Blanche and William Simpson.
