THE YEOMANRY REGIMENTS: A PICTORIAL HISTORY

The Yeomanry Cavalry was first formed in 1794 comprising part-time volunteers, in order to defend Britain from possible invasion by Revolutionary France. In the South African war and the two world wars the Yeomanry Regiments fought initially as Cavalry, Mounted Rifleman and Dismounted Troops and later they served with success as Mechanised, Artillery and Signal regiments. Today their presence is maintained as Territorial Army units.

THE HAWKS

The history of the 14th/20th King's Hussars. They were called "The Hawks" in honour of the Prussian Eagle badge conferred on them in 1798. Their campaigns include the Peninsular War, India and the Mutiny, Persia, the Sikh Wars, Sudan, the Boer War, WWI in Mespotamia and France and The Middle East and Italy in WWII. The regiment's first gallantry award was the commemorative medal struck for the victory at Preston in 1715. Since then the regiment has been awarded two Victoria Crosses.
