Erwin Johannes Eugen Rommel was one of the most distinguished German field marshals of World War II. He was the commander of the Deutsches Afrika Korps and also became known by the nickname The Desert Fox for the skillful military campaigns he waged on behalf of the German Army in North Africa. He was later in command of the German forces opposing the Allied invasion of Normandy. He is remembered for his chivalry towards his adversaries and is also for his role in the plot to assassinate Hitler, for which he was forced to commit suicide before the war's end.

Large paperback. Marks on endpapers but useful study copy. On the last day of 1942 Harold Macmillan left England to take up a post as British Minister Resident in North Africa. By the time he relinquished this office in May 1945 he was responsible for British policy in the Mediterranean area including Italy, Yugoslavia, Greece and the Balkans as well as North Africa. The diaries began as casual letters home to his wife but soon became a regular daily journal.

DIEPPE: AUGUST 1942

Mass market paperback. Good. Operation Jubilee was the disastrous Allied raid on Dieppe. Over 6,000 troops, predominantly Canadian, were supported by large Naval and air force contingents. The objective was to seize and hold the major port for a short period, both to prove it was possible and to gather intelligence from prisoners and captured materials whilst assessing the German response. No major objectives of the raid were accomplished. 3,623 of the 6,086 men who made it ashore were killed, wounded, or captured. The catastrophe at Dieppe later influenced Allied preparations for Operations Torch and Overlord.Operation Jubilee was the disastrous Allied raid on Dieppe. BOYS AT WAR

The author was an Air Gunner flying from Kelstern with 625 squadron. Shot down over Belgium he was eventually captured and imprisoned, and in the dead of winter marched with 1500 other prisoners from Stalag Luft VII to Luckenwalde. After the liberation he returned home still 6 months short of his 21st birthday. This second edition includes a sequel telling of his return 59 years after he was shot down to visit the Belgians who risked everything to help him.
