Originally published c1915 this is the English edition of a description by a Swedish observer of his time with the German Army during the early part of the first World War. Criticised in the English press, the publisher has written an explanatory note of his reason for publishing in which he states that the veracity of the facts are indisputable whilst the authors 'anti-English' opinions, whilst irritating to the British subject, will not affect the British cause.

The memoirs of Thomas James Higgins written from notes and diaries from the Great War. They take the reader from the outbreak of the war, until March 1919 when Higgins was discharged after spending 18 months as a Prisoner of War. He describes joining the North Stafforshire regiment, the crossing to France, his first experiences in the trenches, and life behind the lines. He took part in the action at Gommecourt on July 1st 1916, and in April 1917, he moved to the Lens areas. On July 1st 1917 he was taken prisoner.
