The story of the siege of 1860-61. The Battle was a relatively minor military engagement at the fort in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, that began the American Civil War. After Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as President on March 4, 1861, he stated that he would use force to maintain possession of Federal property. Confederate troops bombarded Sumter on April 12, and northerners rallied behind Lincoln's call to send troops to recapture the fort and to preserve the Union.

The Richmond–Petersburg Campaign was a series of battles in Virginia, fought from June,1864, to March, 1865. The campaign was nine months of trench warfare in which Union forces commanded by Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant assaulted Petersburg unsuccessfully and then constructed trench lines that eventually extended over 30 miles from the eastern outskirts of Richmond to around the eastern and southern outskirts of Petersburg. Lee finally gave in to the overwhelming pressure and abandoned both cities in April 1865.
