EARLY RECORDS OF BRITISH INDIA: A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH SETTLEMENTS IN INDIA
by J Talboys Wheeler

"As told in the Government Records, the works of old travellers, and other contemporary documents, from the earliest period down to the rise of British power in India". The book is presented in extremely faded and worn red boards, frayed and abraded at the corners. Spine is very faded, split and detaching from the binding, which itself is loose. Nonetheless the text is clean and bright with no discernable foxing. There is a handwritten inscription, plus three cancelled stamps indicating that the book was the property of the 2nd Goorkhas Regimental Library. Though recent reprints are available, this volume is the extremely rare first edition published by W. Newman & Co, Calcutta in 1878.

PRISONERS-OF-WAR WORK 1756-1815
by Jane Toller

Between 1756 and 1815 there were thousands of French and Dutch (and some American) POWs confined in prisons and hulks and also on parole in Britain. Within each prison there was a market. The NCOs and other ranks manufactured all sorts of objects for use and for sale - many of fine craftsmanship. This little, finely-printed, book describes the work: Straw work; Bone-work; Wood-work; Rolled and Cut-Paper work; Horn-work; Thread-Lace; Hair-work; Bank-note forging; Coining; even Indecent toys.

GARIBALDI'S DEFENCE OF THE ROMAN REPUBLIC 1848-9
by G M Trevelyan

Living in exile following a failed insurrection in Piedmont in 1834, news of the outbreak of revolution in Palermo in January 1848 and agitation elsewhere in Italy encouraged Garibaldi to lead some sixty members of the Italian legion home. He returned to Italy and offered his services to Charles Albert of Sardinia. Rebuffed, he and his followers crossed into Lombardy where they offered assistance to the provisional government of Milan. Garibaldi took up the command of the defence of Rome but the city fell on June 30, 1849 and Garibaldi was forced to flee to the north.
