Until the Zhob Valley expedition of 1884 the area on the North West Frontier of India, was practically unknown to Europeans. In 1889 the Zhob Valley and Gomal Pass were taken under the control of the British Government and in December 1889, the town of Zhob, then known as Apozai, was occupied and named Fort Sandeman. The force was made up of the No.7 Mountain battery of the Royal Artillery and the 2nd Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry of which, the author was a subaltern attached to F Company.
