THE PORTRAIT OF A GENERAL
by John Colville

General Sir Charles Colville commanded a Division under Wellington in the Penisular, and this biography by his great-grandson is based on his letters. They graphically portray the campaigns and battles, as well as the military and social customs of the time. Examining the slow progress through Portugal to Spain, Colville recounts the close shaves at Fuentes d'Onoro and El Bodon, the siege at Badajos, the victory of Vitoria and the desperate final battles in the Pyrenees. After Waterloo he was served in the army of occupation, and was later responsible for St. Helena where Napoleon was imprisoned.

Facsimile reprint of the 1852 edition. An important eyewitness account of the campaign including Marshal Ney's famous rearguard action. With an extensive introduction by Col. W. Knollys, the author was an ADC to Berthier, Napoleon's Chief of Staff, and later commanded an infantry regiment during the campaign. He and his regiment played a most gallant role in the terrible retreat.

AN AIDE-DE-CAMP OF NAPOLEON

The recollections of General Phillipe, Count de Segur. He joined the French Army in 1800, was attached to Napoleon's staff in 1804 and served in most of Napoleon's major campaigns. He was promoted to the rank of General and served with the Emperor until the end. This is a facsimile of the 1895 edition.
