In July 1809 Napoleon crossed the Danube with 187,000 men to confront the Austrian Archduke Charles and his 145,000 strong army at Wagram on the plains east of Vienna. A Marshal of France and military leader during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, MacDonald came from a Jacobite family who had fled to France from the island of South Uist. He was related to Flora Macdonald, famed for her part in the escape of Bonnie Prince Charlie. A General of Division in 1794 and Marshal of France in 1809, after Wagram, he campaigned in Germany, Italy, Austria, Spain and Russia.
