ALEXANDER AT THE BATTLE OF THE GRANICUS
by Rupert Matthews

In the third book of the Campaign in Context series, the author looks to the first major campaign of Alexander the Great, who was just 20 when he led his army into battle at Granicus. Despite his youth and his army being heavily outnumbered, he was victorious, and it was this victory that allowed him to conquer Asia Minor. The course of this key battle remains controversial, owing to conflicting accounts in contemporary sources. Rupert Matthews carefully balances the evidence from textual sources with knowledge of the battlefield and reconstructed weaponry in order to explain the events of the battle to the reader, and the context in which it took place.

CATACLYSM 90BC
by Philip Matyszak

We are accustomed to think of the late Republic as a period in which Rome enjoyed uninterrupted military success. Yet at the start of the first century BC, Rome faced a hostile army less than a week's march from the Capitol. Three Roman consuls died in battle, and two Roman armies were soundly defeated in the heartland of Italy. Rome's erstwhile Italian allies had the arms, training and military systems of the Roman army which they usually fought alongside, so Rome's usual military advantages were nullified. This brought the war between them and the Republic down to a clash of generals.

THE SWORD OF ROME
by Jeremiah McCall

Marcus Claudius Marcellus's military exploits were largely unmatched. As a young soldier in the First Punic War, he won a reputation for his skill in single combat. In his first consulship, he triumphed over a Gallic tribe, and slew the Gallic chieftain Britomartus. He went on to defeat the hitherto-invincible Hannibal in a small battle around the central Italian city of Nola, and subsequently led an army to subdue and plunder the powerful city of Syracuse in an epic 2 year siege. Yet, despite his undeniable success as a warrior and commander, Marcellus met with considerable political opposition at home.

THE EMPEROR COMMODUS: GOD AND GLADIATOR
by John McHugh

Commodus is synonymous with debauchery and megalomania, best remembered for fighting as a gladiator. Ridiculed and maligned by historians, much of his infamy is clearly based on fact, but is this the real story? This book sets his twelve-year reign in its historical context, showing that the 'kingdom of gold' he supposedly inherited was actually an empire devastated by plague and war. Openly autocratic, Commodus compromised the privileges and vested interests of the senatorial clique, who therefore plotted to murder him. Surviving repeated conspiracies only convinced Commodus that he was under divine protection.

HANNIBAL'S WAR
by John Peddie

The author provides a challenging re-evaluation of the Carthaginian general, Hannibal. He asks how was it that a man so often described by historians as a military genius and a brilliant tactician could have plunged so deeply into a situation in which he was, almost inevitably, to fail? Hannibal's 16 year campaign to conquer Rome was a struggle - that despite early successes, ended in failure. Peddie re-examines the purpose of the campaign, questions the role of the war-elephant and sheds new light on the factors influencing Hannibal's route over the Alps.
