Founded in 1939 by Hungarian Nicholas Kove, Airfix
holds a unique appeal for boys (and girls) of all ages and
has been part of the fabric of childhood for generations.
Packed with photos of the kits from the 1950s to the
present, this Book is a nostalgic look at one of the greatest
brands ever. In addition to the history behind the models it
tells of the dramatic twists and turns of the Airfix saga.
In 2006 it looked as if the great name might disappear
forever when it languished in receivership, only for the
company to be rescued by Hornby. If you were ever
responsible for sending an Airfix Messerschmidt to a fiery
doom from your bedroom window, this book is for you!

The 1st
Polish Armoured Division, under the leadership of General
Stanislaw Maczek, arose out of the ashes of the Polish
defeat in 1939. It was able to return to Europe in August
1944 on the side of the Western Allies, achieving glory in
the Normandy bocage, the Falaise Gap, Hill 262, the advance
into Belgium and Holland, and final victory on German soil.
Because of the politics of post-war Europe, it was unable to
liberate Poland from the tyranny of the Soviet Union. The
book is researched from Polish, English and German sources,
and includes nearly 100 photographs (many previously
unpublished), maps, and detailed appendices, including a
list of medal recipients.

During its twenty years of life as
an independent company, Airspeed designed and built a dozen
different aircraft from the renowned Horsa glider of WWII,
to the Ambassador and Elizabethan airliners of the 1950s.
Airspeed's aircraft were either outstandingly advanced in
design for their time, or especially ingenious. This scarce
Putnam volume details the aircraft designed and constructed
by the company, including designs which never reached
production. Ex Library copy with

The story of a 19 year old who joined the strangely
named First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY) then trained as
a radar mechanic during World War II. From 1943 she was
a radar maintenance officer on London gun-sites and
gives a detailed account of life in the Little Blitz of
Autumn, 1943 to May, 1944. There is a lively description
of the gun sites and the people who worked on them. She
writes of the difficulties of planning and execution,
and praises the men who worked in the Royal Electrical
and Mechanical Engineers (REME) workshops.
