THE SAINTS: THE RHODESIAN LIGHT INFANTRY

by Alex Binda. Edited by Chris Cocks

Apparently less ‘glamorous’ than the Selous Scouts or the SAS, very little has been written about the RLI. Often underrated, but arguably one of the most effective counter-insurgency units of all time, this was the unit that first utilised the ‘Fireforce’ concept — the devastating airborne envelopment and annihilation of the guerrilla enemy. A veritable ‘foreign legion’ with over 20 diverse nationalities serving in the ranks, the RLI was a truly international airborne battalion. It fought the bitter Zimbabwean ‘Bush War’ for 15 years, against the overwhelming tide of communist-trained guerrillas. This splendid new book features hundreds of colour photos, maps, rolls, honours and awards plus a 90 minute DVD with previously unseen combat footage.

HURRICANES OVER MALTA

by Brian Cull & Frederick Galea

A gripping account of the RAF and Commonwealth pilots who flew Hurricanes in defence of Malta between June, 1940 and April, 1942. Most of the fighters defending this tiny bastion flew from aircraft carriers or from North African bases but a handful of pilots arrived on the island via Sunderland flying boats. Many of these men were inexperienced and quickly paid the supreme price, particularly when facing the elite Messerschmitt pilots of 7/JG26. The book is written from diaries and contemporary accounts, and contains many previously unpublished photographs

FIREFORCE

by Chris Cocks

The compelling, brutal but true account of Chris Cocks’s service in 3 Commando, The Rhodesian Light Infantry, during Zimbabwe’s bitter 'Bush War’ of the ’70s ‘Fireforce’, a tactic of total airborne envelopment, was developed and perfected by the RLI, together with the Selous Scouts and the Rhodesian Air Force. Fireforce became the principal strike weapon of the beleaguered Rhodesian forces in their struggle against the overwhelming tide of the Communist-trained and equipped ZANLA and ZIPRA guerrillas. While estimates of enemy casualties vary, there seems little doubt that the RLI accounted for at least 12,000 ZANLA and ZIPRA guerrillas.
