Before World War II the turret
fighter was predicted by many to be the only effective way
of dealing with the new threat of the heavy bomber. In the
event, a two-man fighter with its armament concentrated in a
power-operated turret did not turn out to be the answer. The
Boulton Paul Defiant and the Blackburn Roc were only two
examples of the concept to enter service and only the
Defiant was able to claim any success in combat. From the
archives of Boulton Paul Aircraft, come a host of
photographs and testaments to the Defiant from those who
built them and those who flew them.

The Battle of Britain
saved the country from invasion. If the RAF had been
defeated all the efforts of the British Army and the Royal
Navy would not have averted defeat in the face of complete
German air superiority. This remarkable book traces the
varied fortunes of the Royal Air Force in the 1930s, and
shows how it readied itself for the mighty German onslaught
in the summer of 1940 and won a great victory by the
narrowest margins. It provides a comphrensive account of the
Battle of Britain, including the day-by-day summaries of the
battle. It is illustrated with photographs and maps, an
appendix of the aircraft used by the Royal Air Force and by
the Luftwaffe with schematic drawings, also a list of all
pilots who flew in the battle from July 10 to October 31
1940. It also details aircraft performance, RAF Fighter
Command and subsidiary formations as at 0900 hours Sept 15
1940, plus British and German losses.

OSPREY AIR COMBAT: NORTH
AMERICAN F-100 SUPER SABRE
by David A. Anderton
This is a detailed study of the
world's first supersonic fighter. Developed as a
fighter-interceptor, later converted to a tactical
nuclear-armed strike fighter, the F-100 Super Sabre was
eventually proven in the crucible of the Vietnam war as an
effective and lethal fighter-bomber, 'Wild Weasel' SAM and
flak suppression aircraft, and fast, forward air-controller
('Misty FAC'). The book covers the development, combat
performance and history of the 'Hun' in a readable form, but
with lots of detail.

The
Blitzkrieg in the East, 1941-1945. The Ju 87 Stuka dominated
the opening campaigns of World War II. It was a primary
weapon of German Blitzkrieg tactics and the concept of
lightning warfare. Together with the panzer, it transformed
air and land warfare, with countries falling in days and
weeks, rather than after campaigns lasting years. With more
than 100 photographs and detailed commentary, Stukas over
the Steppe captures the many roles adopted by these famous
dive-bombers as they blasted a path across Eastern Europe.

The goal of the Blackbird program
was to develop a Mach 3, high altitude reconnaissance
vehicle which could elude conventional interceptors and
speedily bring back both strategic and tactical battlefield
intelligence. It succeeded beyond all expectations in these
objectives, having overflown most of the world's hotspots in
its long career, setting numerous world speed and altitude
records on the way. This fascinating volume tells the whole
story along with a selection of rare photographs
