BLACK CROSS, RED STAR -
AIR WAR OVER THE EASTERN FRONT: VOL 5
by Christer Bergstrom
This volume of Black
Cross Red Star is the direct continuation of Volume 4 in the
series. It deals with two of the largest air battles in
history, over the Kuban Bridgehead in the spring of 1943,
and during the Battle of Kursk in July 1943. These are
studied in great detail, with a balance between German and
Soviet sources, many first-hand accounts, and presented with
the true day by-day loss figures on both sides. The work is
based on primary sources and interviews with a large number
of veterans from both sides. It includes Aircraft color
profiles by Jim Laurier, more than 300 photographs, many
from veterans’ private photo albums which have never been
published before, plus a selection of clear maps.

The Nazi Occupation, 1943-44. In September 1943, following
wave upon wave of Allied bombing, Italy announced an
armistice with the Allies. Shortly afterwards, the German
army disarmed Italian forces and, despite military and
partisan resistance, quickly overran Rome. Rome - City in
Terror is a comprehensive history of the nine-month-long
German occupation of the city that followed. The Gestapo
wasted no time enforcing an iron grip on the city once the
occupation was in place. They swiftly eliminated the
Carabinieri, the Italian paramilitary force, rounded up
thousands of Italians to build extensive defensive lines
across Italy, and, at 5am one morning, arrested more than
1,000 Roman Jews and sent them to Auschwitz. This is the
compelling story of an Eternal City brought low, of the
terror and hardship of occupation.

OSPREY NEW VANGUARD 287: SOVIET COLD WAR
ATTACK SUBMARINES
by Edward
Hampshire. Illustrated by Adam Tooby
Nuclear classes from November to
Akula. The fascinating history of the nuclear-powered attack
submarines built and operated by the Soviet Union in the
Cold War. The November class, which were the Soviet Union's
first nuclear submarines, had originally been designed to
fire a single enormous nuclear-tipped torpedo but were
eventually completed as boats firing standard torpedoes. The
Alfa class were perhaps the most remarkable submarines of
the Cold War: titanium-hulled (which was light and strong).
The Victor class formed the backbone of the Soviet nuclear
submarine fleet in the 1970s and 1980s, as hunter-killer
submarines began to focus on tracking and potentially
destroying NATO ballistic missile submarines. The Sierra
classes were further titanium-hulled submarines and the
single Mike-class submarine was an experimental type.
Finally, the Akula class were being constructed as the Cold
War ended, and these boats form the mainstay of the Russian
nuclear attack submarine fleet today.

BATTLES WITH PANZERS:
MONTY'S TANK BATTALIONS 1RTR & 2RTR AT WAR
by Patrick Delaforce
Britain's Royal Tank Regiment has seen the stalemate
of trench warfare, the restoration of battlefield mobility
and the establishment of armoured and mechanized forces as a
dominant factor in battle. During WWI, 1 RTR won two
Victoria Crosses and were victors in the first ever tank
versus tank engagement, and 2 RTR fought in all the key
Western Front battles from Messines to Cambrai. In WWII 1
RTR saw action in the North African desert, in Italy and in
Northwest Europe, whilst 2 RTR fought in France, North
Africa and Burma, and later in the 1944-45 Italian campaign,
ending the war in Austria.

TAMING THE PANZERS: MONTY'S TANK BATTALIONS
3RTR AT WAR
by Patrick Delaforce
The story
of 3rd Battalion, Royal Tank Regiment in WWII. Their defence
of Calais in May 1940 gave the BEF extra time to evacuate
from Dunkirk. In the spring of the following year the
refitted battalion fought the Panzers in the ill-fated
campaign in Greece, the 6 week camapign delaying Operation
Barbarossa. In April, 1941 the remnants of 3RTR embarked for
Egypt, fighting in all the main North African battles under
General Bernard Montgomery. Moving back to NW Europe in 1944
to join the invasion, they were in the thick of the
desparate Normandy battles. Later, after Operation Market
Garden, they took part in the Ardennes campaign and the
advance from the Rhine to the Elbe.
