ARCHAEOLOGY, HISTORY AND
CUSTER'S LAST BATTLE
by Richard Allan Fox Jr.
On the afternoon of June 25, 1867, an overwhelming force of
Sioux and Cheyenne Indians mounted a savage onslaught against
General George Armstrong Custer’s battalion, driving the doomed
troopers of the U.S. Seventh Cavalry to a small hill overlooking
the Little Bighorn River, where they bravely fought their heroic
last stand. So goes the myth of the Battle of the Little Bighorn,
a myth perpetuated and reinforced for over 100 years. In truth,
however, "Custer’s Last Stand" was neither the last of the
fighting nor a stand.

Subtitled 'The Conjurer on the Kwai' this is the incredibly moving
story of Gus Anckorn, a British soldier who was captured by the
Japanese and held for over three and a half years. Before the war,
Gus was a magician and throughout the war, he entertained both
fellow soldiers and Japanese guards with his tricks. Gus
experienced terrible ordeals that no one should have to face. He
should have been killed on four or five occasions, but remarkably
survived due to quick thinking and good luck. He also reveals the
heartache of leaving his fiancee behind and not knowing if he
would ever see her again.

The British Military Experience in Macedonia 1915-1918. The
book covers Salonika Campaign, from the arrival of the first
British troops in 1915 to final victory. Salonika was converted
into a vast military base and over 70 miles of defensive works
were created. We learn of the disappointments of the British XII
Corps offensive in April/May 1917 (The First Battle of Doiran) and
the more successful aggressive raiding in the Struma Valley.
Using first hand accounts a vivid picture of life for the British
Army is painted, with the roles of the Royal Flying Corps/RAF and
RNAS well covered.

This fascinating book provides a study of the longest continuous
war in ancient history and the greatest naval conflict ever fought.
The First Punic War was Rome's first overseas war. It was also
history's first "world war," lasting a quarter century (264-241 BC)
and involving major powers battling by land and sea over a wide
geographic area. In fact, the largest naval battle in history, in
terms of sheer numbers of ships and men, took place during this war
at Ecnomus in 256 BC. The book includes clear maps and provides the
historical sources in each chapter.
