ATOMIC: THE FIRST WAR OF PHYSICS AND
THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE ATOM BOMB - 1939-49
by Jim Baggott
A popular account of the race to build humankind's most
destructive weapon. The book draws on declassified material, such
as MI6's FarmHall transcripts, coded Soviet messages cracked by
American cryptographers in the Venona project, and interpretations
by Russian scholars of documents from the Soviet archives. This is
an epic story of science and technology at the very limits of
human understanding - a tale barely believable as fiction, which
just happens to be historical fact.

The book explains the origins, organisation and roles of the
notorious Kempetai which exercised virtually unlimited power
throughout the Japanese Empire. The author reveals how they
extorted huge sums of money from hapless citizens and businesses
and ran the gulag system which treated Allied captives with
brutality and a complete lack of mercy. Other Kempetai activities
included biological and chemical experiments on live subjects and
slave labour. Their record of reprisals against military and
civilians was unrelenting, amounting to genocide on a grand scale.
