In November 1942, as the Battle of Stalingrad
continued to rage, the Red Army launched a devastating
counter-attack from outside the city. The Soviet forces
smashed the German siege and encircled Stalingrad, trapping
some 290,000 soldiers of the German 6th Army inside. For
almost three months, during the harshest period of the
Russian winter, the besieged German troops endured atrocious
conditions. Freezing cold and reliant on dwindling food
supplies from Luftwaffe air drops, thousands died from
starvation, frostbite or infection, if not from the fighting
itself.

The Murder and Myth of Horst
Wessel. On 14th January 1930, the young member of the SA was
shot in Berlin. Although the crime was never solved, the
murder was most likely committed by a group of communists.
Joseph Goebbels, whose attention had already been drawn to
Wessel as a possible future Nazi leader, recognized the
propaganda potential of 'a young martyr for the Third Reich'
as he wrote in his diary on 23 February 1930. Two months
later, thousands of people lined the streets for Wessel's
funeral parade and Goebbels delivered a eulogy. In the years
that followed Horst Wessel became the hero of the Nazi
movement. His elaborate memorial quickly became a site of
pilgrimage and the 'Horst Wessel Song' became the official
anthem of the Nazi party.

Hans Rose was one of Germany’s most
successful World War I U-boat aces, and her most successful
ace during the convoy period when attacks by U-boats were
most difficult and dangerous. Acknowledging his chivalry, US
Admiral Sims declared ‘Allied naval officers would be
willing today to shake his hand.’ This book is the only time
the Rose family has agreed to make Hans Rose’s personal
papers available to any researcher or biographer. The
authors present new information from the Krupp archives and
naval archives in Britain, US, and Germany.
