This is the story of the "Handschar", the Muslim combat
formation created by the Germans to "restore order in Bosnia."
Raised by the Waffen SS, they were used for anti-partisan
operations in the Balkans and quickly developed a reputation. The
division was commanded by German officers, and composed of native
Germans from Croatia(Volksdeutsche), Croat Christians and Bosniaks,
Muslims from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

OSPREY FORTRESS 60: THE FORTS OF
THE MEUSE IN WORLD WAR I
by Clayton Donnell
On 29 October, 1891, the new forts built around the cities of
Liège and Namur were turned over to the Belgian Army. This huge
project produced 21 modern forts to defend the strategic rail,
river and road arteries in the Oise and Condroz gaps. In August
1914, the German Army attempted a quick crossing of this area in
order to reach France, but it took them 12 crucial days to
destroy the fortresses. Containing maps, diagrams and
photographs taken from private collections, this book explores
the design, development and influence of the forts, highlighting
the importance of their role during the opening battle of World
War I.

MARSHAL VAUBAN AND THE DEFENCE
OF LOUIS XIV'S FRANCE
by James Falkner
Marshal Vauban's highly sophisticated fortress designs, his
advanced theories for the defence and attack of fortified
places, and his prolific work as a writer and radical thinker on
military and social affairs, mark him out as one of the most
influential minds of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth
centuries. This perceptive new account follows his career as a
soldier from a dashing and brave young cavalryman to his
emergence as a masterful military engineer. Louis XIV gave him
the task of fortifying the French borders and Vauban's work in
designing, constructing and improving over 150 fortresses across
France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and northern Italy, along the
Rhine, in the Pyrenees and on France's long coastline, made him
the pre-eminent military engineer of his day.
