This fascinating book provides a study of the longest continuous
war in ancient history and the greatest naval conflict ever fought.
The First Punic War was Rome's first overseas war. It was also
history's first "world war," lasting a quarter century (264-241 BC)
and involving major powers battling by land and sea over a wide
geographic area. In fact, the largest naval battle in history, in
terms of sheer numbers of ships and men, took place during this war
at Ecnomus in 256 BC. The book includes clear maps and provides the
historical sources in each chapter.
"From Normandy to the Baltic with the 11th Armoured Division".
Commanded by General Roberts, one of the youngest of the British
Army's WWII generals. The author recounts the experiences of some
100 soldiers who served in the formation. They participated in the
Normandy Landings and the Battles of the Bridgehead, the advance to
Amiens and Antwerp, Market Garden, the Ardennes, the Rhine crossing
and the advance to the shores of the Baltic. The author served in
the Division throughout the campaign.
OSPREY CAMPAIGN 60: THE EBRO 1938
DEATH KNELL OF THE REPUBLIC
by Chris Henry. Illustrated by Adam Hook
The last major Republican offensive of the Spanish Civil War,
the Battle of the Ebro was a vitally important episode in the
Spanish conflict and, although ultimately a Republican defeat it
proved a severe setback for the Nationalist forces under General
Francesco Franco Bahamonde. According to many historians it
extended the war for an extra year. Ultimately however it was
probably the death knell of the Republic. Their armies lost vast
amounts of men and materials and they were left incapable of
defending their remaining territory effectively.

OSPREY FORTRESS 28: FORTS OF THE AMERICAN FRONTIER
1820-91
by Ron Field. Illustrated by Adam Hook
A major period of westward expansion took place in the United
States during the first half of the 19th century. Fur trading,
the coast-to-coast railroad, the California gold rush and the
removal of Native American tribes facilitated America's manifest
destiny to become a transcontinental nation. The task of
protecting the settlers from the tribes that inhabited the Great
Plains fell to the US Army, and to do this an extensive network
of permanent forts was created. This book examines why the forts
were built, as well as their design, defensive features and the
role they played in the settlement of the American West.
