ZHITOMIR-BERDICHEV: GERMAN
OPERATIONS WEST OF KIEV
24 DECEMBER, 1943-31 JANUARY, 1944. VOLUME 2
by Stephen Barratt
This is the second volume of a two-volume set which
comprise a detailed history of the important operation that
was the beginning of the liberation of western Ukraine. On
24 December 1943, the Red Army launched the first of a
series of winter offensives against the German Army Group
South under von Manstein, the overall object of which was to
liberate western Ukraine from occupation. Based on the
unpublished records of the German 1st and 4th Panzer Armies,
and supplemented by comprehensive mapping and order of
battle data, this book provides a detailed, day-by-day
account of German operations as they developed in response
to the Soviet offensive. It also provides a vivid insight
into the planning and decision-making of the German Army
field commands in conducting a mobile defence plus a series
of counterattacks which could do little more than provide a
temporary respite. This volume describes events from 10 to
31 January 1944 and details the counterattacks undertaken by
the Germans as they tried desperately to stabilise the
situation. By the time the last of these was drawing to a
close, the conditions had already been established for the
next major Soviet offensive in the region: the Korsun'
pocket. The book includes appendices which provide order of
battle detail for both sides, and comes with a separately
bound book of 254 daily situation maps in colour.

HORST WESSEL: THE
COMBAT HISTORY OF THE 18.SS-PANZER-GRENADIER-DIVISION
by Wilhelm Tieke
The combat histories of two units; 1.SS-Infanterie
Brigade (mot) and 18.SS-Panzer-Grenadier-Division Horst
Wessel. 1.SS-Infanterie Brigade (mot) was employed at the
central and southern parts of the Eastern Front from the
beginning of the war against the Soviet Union in June 1941
until early 1944, when it was transfered to Stablach, East
Prussia for refitting. The brigade’s remnants became the
nucleus of the new 18.SS-Panzer-Grenadier-Division Horst
Wessel and they were transferred to Croatia in the spring of
1944. Filling its ranks proved difficult and it never
reached its authorized strength. The intent to form it from
Hungarian Volksdeutsche failed because not enough volunteers
stepped forward. It surrendered in Southeast Germany in May
1945.

Describes the WWII battles for the
Crimea on two levels: tactical and strategic. Excellent
accounts of small actions are nicely woven into the overall
description of the intense fighting for the Black Sea
peninsula. All important phases of that unique battle front
are covered, including the penetration through the Isthmus
of Perekop in 1941, the combat on the Tschatyrlyk, and the
pursuit to Sevastopol, where the Germans were halted by the
city’s powerful defenses. Following the drive to Kerch and
some setbacks, after a 4 week brutal siege Sevastopol was
captured on 1 July 1942. The uneasy German occupation lasted
until 1944 when the Soviet army recaptured Crimea in early
May 1944. Feldmarshall Erich von Manstein led the German
forces during the battles, provideing brilliant leadership,
but he was hampered by a lack of sufficient forces and
equipment.

THE 1ST FALLSCHIRMJAGER DIVISION
IN WORLD WAR II:
VOLUME ONE: YEARS OF ATTACK
by Ben Christensen
The
men of the German 1st Parachute Division are renowned as
some of the best soldiers of World War II. At Eben Emael
they executed the most successful commando raid of the war,
on Crete the most audacious attack, and in Monte Cassino the
most dogged defence. The books contains thirty detailed
Orders of Battle, 500 short biographies of the key personnel
in the division, and a list of all the Knights Cross and the
German Cross in Gold winners. This first volume follows the
recruitment and training of the Fallschirmjagers and their
revolutionary vertical deployment in Scandinavia, Holland,
Eben Emael, Corinth and Crete, and as elite infantry on the
Eastern Front.

SS-FREIWILLIGEN-GRENADIER-DIVISION "30 JANUAR"
by Rolf Michaelis
After the Red Army had reached the Oder at the end of
January, 1945, a new SS division was raised to confront them
in the defence of the Reich. With little time for training,
32.SS division, "30 Januar" was deployed in the area south
Frankfurt/Oder in February, 1945. The division was decimated
in the large-scale Soviet attack of 16th April, 1945. This

members of the division, is complimented by facsimile

orders.
