RENDEZVOUS WITH DESTINY:
A HISTORY OF THE 101ST AIRBORNE DIVISION
by Leonard Rapport & Arthur
Northwood Jr.
This history
of the 101st Airborne Division is unique among military
histories. Never before had such a detailed study been made
of the organization, training and operations of a single
division of the United States Army. Each action in which the
Division took part has been minutely studied and checked
against available operations reports and the memories of the
men who were there. The operations of the 101st in Normandy,
Holland and Bastogne have been set forth as a whole and then
broken down into their smallest possible parts: the
operations of platoons and squads and in some cases even
individuals. In addition to the almost incredible detailed
text, the authors have included 107 maps illustrating
specific operations and over one hundred photographs and
drawings of airborne troopers in training and in action.
This is the substantial, enlarged second edition. The
dustwrapper is slightly chipped (invisibly repaired) and the
book is in fine condition, presented in white boards with
gilt and black spine titles and attractive 'Screaming
Eagles' and 'Airborne' regimental insignia in gilt, black,

One of the first US Army Air
Force P-47 Thunderbolt groups to see action in the European
Theatre of Operations, the 56th Fighter Group was also the
only fighter unit within the Eighth Air Force to remain
equipped with the mighty P-47 until war's end. Led by the
inspirational ‘Hub' Zemke, this group was responsible for
devising many of the bomber escort tactics employed by VIII
Fighter Command between 1943 and 1945. By VE-Day the 56th FG
had shot down 100 more enemy aircraft than any other group
in the Eighth Air Force, its pilots being credited with 677
kills during 447 missions. The exploits of this elite
fighter unit are detailed in this volume with photographs
plus colour aircraft profiles and insignia.

The goal of the Blackbird program
was to develop a Mach 3, high altitude reconnaissance
vehicle which could elude conventional interceptors and
speedily bring back both strategic and tactical battlefield
intelligence. It succeeded beyond all expectations in these
objectives, having overflown most of the world's hotspots in
its long career, setting numerous world speed and altitude
records on the way. This fascinating volume tells the whole
