OSPREY COMBAT AIRCRAFT 12:
RF-8 CRUSADER UNITS OVER CUBA AND VIETNAM
by Peter Mersky. Illustrated
by Tom Tullis
Although the Crusader was built
first and foremost as a Navy interceptor, a
photo-reconnaissance variant was also produced by Vought.
The photo-bird's first operational test came in the autumn
of 1962 when its overflights of Cuba alerted the world to
the likely presence of medium-range ballistic missiles on
the Caribbean island. The recce Crusader's next actions came
during the long years of the Vietnam War. This volume is the
second of two in the Combat Aircraft series devoted to the
Crusader, the first title by Peter Mersky having covered the
F-8 fighter variants, and their MiG-killing exploits over
Vietnam.

OSPREY
COMBAT AIRCRAFT 7:
F-8 CRUSADER UNITS OF THE VIETNAM WAR
by Peter Mersky.
Illustrated by Tom Tullis
Known to its pilots as the 'last of
the gunfighters' due to its quartet of Colt-Browning Mk 12
20 mm cannon, the F-8 Crusader was numerically the most
populous fighter in the US Navy at the start of America's
involvement in the Vietnam conflict in 1964 - some 482
F-8C/D/Es equipped 17 frontline units. It enjoyed great
success against North Vietnamese Mig-17s and Mig-21s during
the Rolling Thunder campaign of 1965-68, officially downing
18 jets, which represented 53 per cent of all Mig claims
lodged by Navy squadrons during this period.

This outstanding book offers a
superb collection of photographs of scale models from
contributors throughout the world, and digital images by
Mario Merino and Andreas Ott of secret German designs. Myhra
gives the reader much more than pictures of proposed German
aircraft projects, the total number of German projects
described being in excess of 400. From Blohm und Voss with
over 200 project designs, he examines Wolderman Voight's Me
P.1101, Gotha's Go P.60, the Horten brother's Flying Wings
and Alexander Lippisch's many projects. Although over 400
proposed aircraft were on the drawing board when the war in
Europe ended in May 1945, only a handful had reached the
prototype stage.

An extensively illustrated study of
Hitler's V-1 Terror Weapon. The author examines its
development from inception in 1939, test firings from
Peenemunde and the commencement of attacks on London and
Southern England during 1944 − over 500 were launched
between May and June alone. The book also covers the
launching equipment and bunkers, manned and air-launched
versions and contains details of production, including that
at Nordhausen. This was in an underground factory called
Mittelwerk which was excavated beneath Kohnstein Mountain in
the Hartz range. Labour was provided by slave workers from
nearby concentration camps.
