This book remains the definitive work on the subject. It
describes in detail the aircraft, the aircrew and their
operations in the defence of the UK against German day and
night raids during World War One. These were carried out by
Zeppelin airships as well as multi-engined bombers such as
the Gotha. Every aircraft recorded as having taken off in
response to a raid is listed, where possible with its
service number and its crew. A collectible volume.
Italy's entry into the Second World War on 10 June,
1940, signalled the start of the siege of Malta, and for the
next two and a half years the Axis powers did all they could
to batter the island into submission. Malta’s defences were
initially non-existent but Winston Churchill, could not give
up on the island. Laying at the crossroads of the
Mediterranean, where the supply route between Italy and the
Axis armies in Libya crossed the Allied sea route between
Gibraltar and Alexandria, Malta was strategically too
important and held the key to the desert war being fought in
North Africa.
Unusual
in being designed as a 4-gun turret armed fighter, the
Defiant scored some early victories in the Battle of
Britain, however it was soon outperformed by Luftwaffe
fighters. It later went on to night fighter and target
towing roles. Drawings are provided in both colour side and
plan view with 1:72 scale plans, kit decal and accessory
lists, squadrons, units and individual aircraft serials and
codes.

The Life of General Sir Richard
McCreery, Commander Eighth Army. In October 1944 Dick
McCreery became the third and final Commander of the
legendary Eighth Army in Italy – in succession to Monty and
Oliver Leese. With his outstanding record as a fighting
soldier and armoured tactician, it was no surprise to anyone
that he was to be hugely successful. McCreery was
commissioned into the 12th Royal Lancers in 1915 and served
on the Western Front surviving a serious wound and winning
the MC. As Commander 8th Army it was his brilliant plan to
seize the Argenta Gap which enabled the Allies to drive the
Germans back across the River Po into Austria.
An evocative portrait of the
county during the First World War, the book reveals the
huge turmoil caused by the war, including the
mobilization of troops, the requisitioning of animals,
the care of casualties, and the shortages of food. The
author also describes how the Home Front also became the
front line of enemy air raids with the first use of
aerial bombing in a global conflict, and the effect of
this on the population. The book reveals the effect on
this rural county brought about by huge losses among its
youth.
