The second volume of the history of the Royal Electrical and
Mechanical Engineers - REME. The authors have drawn on archive
material and personal accounts to produce a quarter of century of
history, to the completion of the 50th anniversary of the Corps'
foundation. During this period they had to adapt and innovate to
provide the support needed. We were at war in the Falklands, the
Gulf and constantly on operations in Northern Ireland. The Corps'
essential part in these campaigns is fully described, largely
through the words of those who took part.

Winston Churchill claimed that the submarine war in the Atlantic
was the only campaign of the Second World War that really
frightened him. If the lifeline to North America had been cut,
Britain would never have survived. There could have been no
build-up of US and Commonwealth forces, no D-Day landings, and no
victory in western Europe. The balance of advantage was to see-saw
between U-boats and escorts throughout the war with new weapons
and sensors introduced at a rapid rate.
This revealing book throws light on a top secret unit of WWII -
America's 23rd Special Troops. The formation was deployed in
occupied Europe and carried out dangerous tactical deception
missions to confuse and disrupt the Germans. The 23rd Special
Troops consisted of four main units: a signal deception unit to
broadcast fake or misleading signals, an engineer camouflage
formation, a combat engineer unit and a sonic deception team.
Sworn to secrecy, the men of the 23rd Special Troops were a
dedicated team of specialists assigned to critical missions and
covert operations across Europe.
