In September 1943 the Allies landed on
the so-called “soft underbelly” of Europe. The aim was to quickly
knock Italy out of the war, but the Germans, under the Kesselring,
mounted a tenacious and skillful defense in the mountainous
terrain. Some of the most brutal battles of the Western Front were
fought in Italy, most notably at Cassino which lasted nearly six
months. German forces in Italy did not surrender until 2 May 1945,
only 6 days before the end of the war in Europe. An interesting
perspective from the German viewpoint.

HEINKEL HE 162 "VOLKSJÄGER": LAST-DITCH EFFORT BY THE LUFTWAFFE
by Peter Müller
A collectible study on the versatile He 162 jet fighter. The
Volksjäger was made primarily of wood as metals were in very short
supply and prioritised for other aircraft. It was nevertheless the
fastest of the first generation of Axis and Allied jets. This
detailed volume includes several hundred photographs, tables and
plans, many being facsimile copies of original Reich Air Ministry
and Heinkel documentation. There are also ten pages of colour plan
and side views of various operational aircraft plus a number of unit
insignia, also in full colour.

Following the successful Allied landings in Normandy in June
1944 German forces battled for two months to contain the
bridgehead, but their last-ditch attempt to recover the initiative
with Operation Lüttich, the counter-attack from Mortain on August
7, failed. From that starting point the author follows the
footsteps of the German retreat across France. Although nearly
300,000 men were either killed, wounded, missing, or taken
prisoner, by the beginning of September German forces were once
more standing firm along the 650 kilometres between Switzerland
and the North Sea. This, is that story told through hundreds of
'then and now' comparison photographs.

In September, 1944 the largest ever airborne operation took
place over Dutch territory. 'Market Garden' was a combined ground
and airborne offensive to capture and hold crossings over the
canals and rivers between Arnhem and Eindhoven, and to dominate
the area between the Zuiderzee and the Rhine. This impressive
book, which is signed by the author, is a detailed account of the
role of the Glider Pilot Regiment and the RAF, and their
contribution to the operation. It contains eyewitness accounts,
details of units and operations as well as a comprehensive list of
those who took part.
