The authors
examine the parallel developments of RAF night bombing, and
night fighting in the Luftwaffe up to the climax of the
strategic bombing offensive in 1945 and the introduction of
the German Me 262 jet night fighter. They have traced
surviving aircrew from both sides and have matched many
Bomber Command losses to German night fighter claims. The
narrative is extensively illustrated with more than 400 rare
and mostly unpublished photographs from the personal
collections of veterans.

During the Battle of Britain
and in the dark and dangerous period which followed, many
people in the British Isles would have been all too aware of
the shape and sound of the twin-engined Heinkel 111 bomber,
with its distinctive glazed nose. Though still in front line
service in large numbers at this time, the aircraft was
already becoming obselete. The type first flew in 1935 and
saw active service during the Spanish Civil War. It was used
to equip Kampfgruppe 88, the bomber component of Legion
Condor, Hitler's aerial assistance to the Spanish fascists.
Later it served in a wide variety of roles. Though mainly
used as a bomber, it also undertook reconnaissance, torpedo
bombing, glider towing and transport roles.

Unbelievably the supersonic B-58 bomber was designed in
the late 1940s but the first flight of the prototype did not
take place until late 1956. It would not look out of place
in the 21st century and the delta-wing, Mach 2 Hustler had
the performance of a fighter but its career was short due to
technical problems and excessive costs. It was withdrawn in
1970 having only become operational in mid 1960. The basic
design was intended to be truly multi-role with ECM, missile
launching and even fighter-bomber versions planned.

OSPREY AIR COMBAT: NORTH
AMERICAN F-100 SUPER SABRE
by David A. Anderton
This is a
detailed study of the world's first supersonic fighter.
Developed as a fighter-interceptor, later converted to a
tactical nuclear-armed strike fighter, the F-100 Super Sabre
was eventually proven in the crucible of the Vietnam war as
an effective and lethal fighter-bomber, 'Wild Weasel' SAM
and flak suppression aircraft, and fast, forward
air-controller ('Misty FAC'). The book covers the
development, combat performance and history of the 'Hun' in
a readable form, but with lots of detail.

slightly creased card cover - 200pp, 26 colour & 160 b/w
