THE 1ST FALLSCHIRMJAGER
DIVISION IN WORLD WAR II:
VOLUME ONE: YEARS OF ATTACK
by Ben Christensen
The men of the German 1st Parachute Division are renowned as
some of the best soldiers of World War II. At Eben Emael
they executed the most successful commando raid of the war,
on Crete the most audacious attack, and in Monte Cassino the
most dogged defence. The books contains thirty detailed
Orders of Battle, 500 short biographies of the key personnel
in the division, and a list of all the Knights Cross and the
German Cross in Gold winners. This first volume follows the
recruitment and training of the Fallschirmjagers and their
revolutionary vertical deployment in Scandinavia, Holland,
Eben Emael, Corinth and Crete, and as elite infantry on the
Eastern Front.

During the Second World War the Corinth Canal assumed an
importance disproportionate to its size. It was the focus of
numerous special operations to prevent oil from the Black
Sea reaching Italy, to delay the invasion of Crete and to
sever vital German supply lines to Rommel's Army in North
Africa. German airborne forces occupied the Canal to cut off
the ANZAC retreat and Hitler needed the Canal kept open to
maintain control of the Aegean Sea. Were this lost, he
feared Turkey entering the War on the Allied side. The
author unearths a treasure trove of facts on the little
known operations of SOE and other special forces units.
A superb and almost certainly the most detailed, study of
the development of the British fighting aeroplane. Nearly
400 types are fully described, along with their development
and operational histories. They range from the Royal
Aircraft Factory F.E.2 of 1912, through the two World Wars,
to the Harrier, Jaguar and Tornado of the 1990s. The author
records the deployment of Fighter Squadrons at various
periods from July 1916 to January 1991. This outstandingly
detailed survey is enriched by a superb collection of
photographs and general arrangement drawings,
Alexander's conquest of the Persian Empire. He was
undoubtedly one of the greatest generals of all time and
this book examines the principle battles of Alexander's
campaigns. The battles of the Granicus, Issus,
Gaugamela, Hydaspes and the difficult siege of Tyre are
all discussed at length. These careful studies shed
light on Macedonian tactics in particular the
combination of armoured infantry phalanx with
fast-moving cavalry.
