FALKLANDS HERO: IAN MCKAY, THE
LAST VC OF THE 20TH CENTURY
by Jon Cooksey
At the height of the bitter battle for Mount Longdon
during the Falklands War, the assault by 3rd Battalion, Parachute
Regiment stalled in the face of determined resistance. With his
platoon held up by an Argentine machine gun, Sergeant Ian McKay
gathered his men and led them in a headlong dash into the teeth of
withering fire. One by one they fell until only Ian McKay was
left, charging on alone towards the Argentine position. His was
the final act of a man who lived, breathed and was shaped by the
Parachute Regiment: an act which earned him a posthumous Victoria
Cross.
This book traces the development of RAF Police and describes in
detail their wide ranging operations within Europe since 1918.
During World War II the RAF Police supported war operations
forming part of the British Expeditionary Force into France. They
were later deployed onto the Normandy beaches on D-Day to help
liberate Europe from the Nazi regime and, in late 1944, they were
present during the Greek civil war. In 1949 RAF Police
successfully concluded an investigation into the murder, by the
Gestapo in 1944, of 50 RAF officers who took part in the Great
Escape from Stalag Luft III. Throughout the period of the Cold War
RAF Police were responsible for safeguarding deployed nuclear
weapons, and they have supported operations in Northern Ireland,
plus NATO and UN operations in the Balkans.

The Victoria Cross remains the supreme British award for
bravery, taking precedence over all other awards and decorations.
During its 160-year history since the first medals were awarded
during the Crimean War in the 1850s, 1,357 have been won and no
less than 69 of them have gone to Yorkshiremen. Among the roll of
the brave whose gallantry and self-sacrifice are celebrated in
these pages, are the names and extraordinary deeds of men who were
either born or bred or lived and died in Yorkshire, the first
being Bombardier Thomas Wilkinson in 1857.
