A comprehensive biography of General-leutnant Fritz
Bayerlein (1899-1970), commander of the elite Panzer Lehr
Division during World War II and Erwin Rommel's former
Chief-of-Staff. Covers his experiences with General Heinz
Guderian in the invasions of Poland, France, and Russia,
plus his service in North Africa, Hungary, Normandy and the
Ruhr. During the Russian winter of 1943-1944, Bayerlein
commanded the famous Berlin-Brandenburg 3rd Panzer Division.
In his own words he shows his feelings and frustrations on
fighting a war of useless bloodshed. Bayerlein's personal
friend, Manfred Rommel, provides remarkable insight into the
man's nature. Many previously unpublished photographs plus
twenty maps drawn by Bayerlein make this book invaluable to
military historians.

First published in 1949, this is 'A Statement of Evidence
Written in 1940'. Having returned home from military service
following the fall of France, Bloch wrote this manuscript to
analyse the military faiures he had witnessed. He concluded that
the immediate cause of the disaster was the utter incompetence
of the French High command. Having worked with the Resistance
since 1942, he was arrested by the Vichy police in March, 1944.
They handed him over to the Gestapo who tortured and shot him.
HMS Glamorgan was in the thick of the fighting throughout the
1982 Falklands War and became the only ship to survive an Exocet
hit. Incorporating vivid first-hand accounts written at the
time, and illustrated with many previously unpublished
photographs, the book portrays the daily life of an escort under
wartime conditions. New light is shed on the Belgrano affair and
startling new facts are revealed about other incidents. All the
Exocet attacks on the Battle Group are included, culminating
with the desperate fight to save Glamorgan.
Unbelievably the supersonic B-58 bomber was designed in
the late 1940s but the first flight of the prototype did not
take place until late 1956. It would not look out of place
in the 21st century and the delta-wing, Mach 2 Hustler had
the performance of a fighter but its career was short due to
technical problems and excessive costs. It was withdrawn in
1970 having only become operational in mid 1960. The basic
design was intended to be truly multi-role with ECM, missile
launching and even fighter-bomber versions planned.
