Written by a recognised authority on the air war over
the Eastern Front, this book provides an informed,
detailed and balanced account of the massive aerial
campaign fought in the skies over the Soviet Union
following the launch of Operation Barbarossa. Unlike
most recent histories, this account features newly
discovered information from both Russian and German
sources and significantly expands the author's earlier
study of this campaign. There is also much unique
eye-witness material, and the text is accompanied by a
large number of rare and previously unpublished
photographs, biographical studies of major players in
the conflict, data tables, technical assessments, and
appendices.

In 1935, under the auspices of the Third Reich's cultural and
recreational organization "Kraft durch Freude" (Strength through
Joy), Robert Ley enlisted architect" Clemens Klotz for an
ambitious project. At Prora, a beach resort on the island of
Rügen, a huge resort complex was built for the German Labour
Front - DAF. Eight huge buildings were constructed extending
over a length of 4.5 kilometres, fronting the long, flat, sandy
beach. Although planned as a holiday resort for workers, they
were never used as such. During the Cold War the resort was used
by the National Peoples' Army of the GDR. Today the partially
ruined complex is listed as a striking example of Nazi
architecture.

Following the successful Allied landings in Normandy in June
1944 German forces battled for two months to contain the
bridgehead, but their last-ditch attempt to recover the initiative
with Operation Lüttich, the counter-attack from Mortain on August
7, failed. From that starting point the author follows the
footsteps of the German retreat across France. Although nearly
300,000 men were either killed, wounded, missing, or taken
prisoner, by the beginning of September German forces were once
more standing firm along the 650 kilometres between Switzerland
and the North Sea. This, is that story told through hundreds of
'then and now' comparison photographs.

In the years between 1940 and 1945, a
total of approximately 12,500 Belgians served in the Waffen-SS,
a number roughly equal to the strength of an infantry division
in 1944. Because of political and social problems and different
objectives of the volunteers, however, the men were not combined
in a single unit, rather they were deployed in three different
formations. This book describes the major units of the Waffen-SS
in which they were concentrated, where they were deployed, and
the battles they took part in.

From August, 1944, under the pseudonym"Hornisse", forced
laborers and concentration camp prisoners constructed a shelter in
Bremen Gröpelingen for the building of submarine sections by AG
Weser. The prisoners were held at KZ Neuengamme Concentration
Camp, located 15 km southeast of Hamburg. Eye witness accounts and
documents reveal the extent to which Bremen was covered by a
network of camps where many thousands prisoners suffered and died.
This is their story.
