PANZERS IN THE SAND: THE HISTORY OF PANZER-REGIMENT 5,
                                                                                  VOLUME TWO 1942-45

by Bernd Hartmann

Panzer-Regiment 5 joined Erwin Rommel in North Africa and helped the Desert Fox win an impressive string of victories during 1941. The Germans began 1942 with an offensive that quickly captured Benghazi and then drove east toward the fortress of Tobruk, before being halted by the British at El Alamein in October. By 1943, the African campaign had shifted west to Tunisia. Crippled by supply problems and Allied air superiority, the Germans surrendered in May 1943. The remnants of Pz-Rgt 5 were eventually reconstituted as Panzer-Abteilung 5, an assault gun unit, and sent to the Eastern Front. Featuring scores of photographs and vivid firsthand accounts from members of the unit, this second volume continues the combat history of PzRgt and PzAbteilung 5, from the sand and sun of North Africa to the bitter end near Berlin.

First published in German in 2002, these two volumes are a comprehensive history of Panzer-Regiment 5 by a veteran of the formation.

RUSSIAN STRATEGIC AVIATION TODAY

by Yefim Gordon & Dmitriy Komissarov

The Russian Air Force’s strategic bomber component was inherited from the Soviet Air Force after the disintegration of the Soviet Union. It began by recovering some of the heavy bomber assets left outside its borders, including Tu-95MS Bear-Hs based in Kazakhstan, eight Tu-160 Blackjacks and three Tu-22M Backfire-Cs taken over by the Ukraine. Flown by the Russian Air Force’s 37th Air Army these bombers were involved in, amongst others, the military operation to against Georgia over South Ossetia in august 2008 and a visit to Venezuela by three Tu-160s which caused much consternation in the USA. The book includes development and design history of the Blackjack, Bear and Backfire, their armament, unit badges and insignia. With over 500 photographs, many previously unreleased, detailed line drawings and colour profiles of individual names and nose art, this book provides a wealth of information for the historian and modeler alike.

EXORCISING HITLER

by Frederick Taylor

The Occupation and Denazification of Germany. Germany had entered the twentieth century prosperous and strong. During the 1930s, embittered by a lost war and scarred by mass unemployment, Germany embraced the dark cult of National Socialism. Within less than a generation, its great cities lay in ruins and its shattered industries and its cultural heritage seemed beyond salvation. This is the story of Germany’s year zero, telling of the final Allied campaign, the hunting down of the Nazi resistance, the vast displacement of peoples, the competition between Soviet Russia and the West and the hunger and near starvation of a once proud people.
