A classic
Battlefield Guide from the 'After the Battle' team. In this
revised edition John Giles has succeeded in recapturing the
atmosphere of an era when men fought savage battles in and
around water-filled trenches, amongst the stinking litter of
war. Eye-witness accounts of the bitter fighting are blended
with contemporary photographs and comparison pictures taken
by the author of the same places today. The result is a
salute to all those men who marched along the roads of
Picardy to the trenches of the Somme battleground, many of
whom never returned.
THE FINEST OF ALL: LOCAL MEN
ON THE SOMME, 1ST JULY, 1916
by Fred Holcroft
1st July, 1916, the opening day of the Battle of the

HITLER'S PRE-EMPTIVE WAR: THE BATTLE FOR
NORWAY, 1940
by Henrik
O. Lunde
After
Hitler conquered Poland the British began to exert control of
the coastline of neutral Norway, an action that threatened to
cut off Germany’s iron-ore conduit to Sweden. The Germans
quickly responded with a dizzying series of assaults. Airlifted
infantry, mountain troops and paratroopers seized Norwegian
strong points, forestalling larger Allied units. The German navy
also set sail ensuring that key harbours could be held. The air,
airborne, naval, amphibious, infantry, armoured and commando
aspects of this brief but violent campaign are covered in

HE WAS MY CHIEF: THE MEMOIRS OF ADOLF HITLER'S
SECRETARY
by Christa Schroeder
Christa Schroeder was perfectly placed to observe the actions
and behaviour of Hitler, along with the most important figures
surrounding him and her memoir does not fail to deliver
fascinating insights. She notes Hitler's bourgeois manners, his
vehement abstemiousness and his mood swings, and reflects
candidly on political and military developments from the
earliest days of the regime through its final collapse. This is,
without doubt, one of the most important primary sources from
the wartime period.
