TIGRIS GUNBOATS

by Wilfred Nunn

The Forgotten War in Iraq, 1914-1917. British naval supremacy supported the British Army's advance up the Tigris marshlands. Against heavy odds, the Navy's gunboats provided close artillery support and transport capability. Beginning as an ad hoc operation by the Indian Army to secure Western oil supplies, initial successes were followed by the disastrous surrender at Kut, a reassessment of strategy and the final triumphant capture of Baghdad. Inter-tribal rivalries, were faced from the outset, but with experienced colonial administrators from India, the British were well-equipped to preserve civil order. The author was the senior Naval officer on the Tigris.

THE BLACK WATCH: A CONCISE HISTORY

by Trevor Royle

The Black Watch was formed at Aberfeldy in Perthshire in the early eighteenth century to guard the approaches to the lawless areas of the Scottish Highlands. Instantly recognisable by its famous red hackle cap badge and the traditional dark blue and green tartan kilt, the regiment was renowned as one of the great fighting units of the British Army and served with distinction in all major conflicts from the War of Austrian Succession to the second Iraq War in 2003. In 2006, as part of a radical review of the UK's defence policy, The Black Watch was amalgamated into the new Royal Regiment of Scotland.
