The Leibstandarte started out as Hitler’s personal
bodyguard but even before the war broke out it had
expanded to take on more and more military duties. It
participated in the occupation of the Sudetenland and
Czechoslovakia and the annexation of Austria. Eventually
it evolved into the 1. SS-Panzer-Division “Leibstandarte
SS Adolf Hitler” under its long-time commander, Sepp
Dietrich. The author has located and interviewed
surviving members including SS-Brigadeführer und
Generalmajor der Waffen-SS Wilhelm Mohnke. The book
includes hundreds of photographs of military
personalities and the forces in the field with their
weapons and equipment, plus 165 images of award
documents.
