The experiences of the air and ground crew of the USAAF in
Britain and Western Europe in World War II. The book includes the
personal recollections and memories of the Airmen stationed in
Britain, and shows their significant contribution to the defeat of
Nazi Germany. For these young Americans the war was particularly
hard to get used to as they fought in the cold, hostile skies over
Germany, returned to the comfort and security of their permanent
base, and repeated the process again and again until their tour
was over (after 25 missions), or they failed to return.

Notable Military Historian, John Laffin, brings together the
stories of more than twenty operations carried out in WWII by
Allied and Axis forces against targets selected for their
strategic or propaganda values. The exploits recounted here range
from a British commando strike against Rommel's supposed HQ in
North Africa, SS Colonel Otto Skorzeny's daring raid to snatch
Mussolini from his Italian mountaintop prison to 'Operation
Jericho' - the attack by RAF Mosquitos to free imprisoned French
Resistance leaders from a Gestapo prison
The remarkable airborne operation by the US Army's 503rd
Paratroop Regimental Combat Team on Corregidor in February 1945.
The objective was to capture the 'impregnable' position from a
fanatical Japanese defence and the battle lasted from 16th to 26th
February. Large numbers of Japanese troops drowned while
attempting to swim away from the Rock, and many more sealed
themselves in numerous subterranean passages of the island.
Indeed, twenty or so Japanese soldiers did not surrender until 1st
January, 1946 as they had been unaware of Japan's defeat in
August, 1945.
